Yangmingshan National Park is an important channel for social and environmental education. Several individualistic schools with beautiful environments are found both within the park grounds and in the immediate surrounding area. These schools boast more environmental resources than the average municipal school, and are the perfect platform for promoting environmental education. If we can combine the experience of our national parks with certain designated schools in accordance with the Environmental Education Act, which will come into force in 2011, it will surely give a boost to the promotion of environmental education.
We have worked with the Taipei Teachers' In-Service Education Center to come up with a list of six schools in the Yangmingshan area: the Hutian, Hushan, Datun, and Quanyuan elementary schools, Gezhi Junior High School, and the Dunxu High School of Industry and Commerce. These six schools are now members of the "Yangmingshan ecological school" partnership. Yangmingshan provides relevant materials and shares our experience in the hopes of promoting the idea to other areas and institutions, starting with these six schools.
Yangmingshan is a metropolitan national park. Its ease of access makes it highly accessible to visitors. It is also one of the few national parks in the world to be predominantly focused on volcanic terrain. Yangmingshan National Park is a nature classroom full of natural resources. The park also possesses various cultural and human resources which assist in promoting education through the combined efforts with our partner ecological schools.
